Why I want to do this ride

My mother’ was recently diagnosed with emphysema from what they believe is "second hand smoke".  She worked in the basement level of an office building that allowed smoking with insufficient ventilation.  I was   shocked on how she looked when she could not catch her breath on a short walk in the park.  I am searching for some younger person(s) either who is a survivor of lung disease or who has recently stopped smoking.  I would like to ride in tribute to him/her and would put their names on my jersey along with my sponsors.  I think this would be a great incentive for someone knowing that I would think and pray for their success.

The Commitment

We all experience life's challenges in some way and are tested on how well we measure up to them.  My test involves a committment to an enormous challenge that involves fundraising, riding my bike across America and camping for 45 days.  In January of this year,  I decided to make the commitment to take part in an historical event organized by the American Lung Association – the GTE Big Ride Across America. On June 15, I will join 1,000 cyclists on an life-changing adventure from Seattle, Washington to Washington, D.C. We will cycle over 3,000 miles in the span of 45 days, and our goal is to raise $8 million to support the research, education and advocacy programs of the ALA.

My goal is to raise $6,000 which is the minimum committment for the American Lung Association. I feel if I cannot do the research for the prevention of lung disease, I will make every effort to provide the funds necessary to assist those who can. This goal is a reflection of my respect and gratitude for this organization’s work. To reach my goal, I need your help. More than that, I need your commitment, your support, and your strength to be a part of my journey. Your pledge will not only help me reach my financial goal, but it will inspire me as I train and fundraise from now until the Ride. All pledges are due May 25 to the ALA office in Florida.

The Pledge

As of this writing, May 25, 1998, I have raised $6,560 for the American Lung Association and the pledges are still coming in.   Thanks is noted below.

To get a Pledge Form Click Here, then print the form.  After printing the form use the BACK Button to Return.

You will see my name and rider number 1975 on the upper right side of the form. Please take a few minutes to read it while you decide how much you can contribute. Did you know that lung disease – including asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and lung cancer – is the third leading cause of death in the United States? Breathing problems are the number one cause of death in infants. Lung cancer has become the number one killer of Americans. The American Lung Association’s focus is not just disease related though. Some of its most effective efforts include protection from air pollution, and assisting thousands of people to successfully resist the tobacco temptation with cessation programs such as the "Smoke Free Class of 2000" with efforts aimed at America's youth.
